So, I’m looking at a car, pretty good price, very pretty, no accidents, blah blah blah. There’s just one thing - I ran the Carfax, and while it was in the possession of a reputable dealer, the mileage rolled back by less than 3K (three day span between the reports). My first reaction was that this wasn’t really a big deal at all... do you think I should be more concerned? My first guess was that something to do with the odometer was replaced while in the dealer’s possession, and they just didn’t enter it in quite right... It just seems like something that isn’t an issue. Am I crazy?

If you’re going to roll back mileage, go for broke, not 3k. People enter the wrong numbers often enough, I’m sure that’s all it is. But definitely do your due diligence to be certain.

What are the two numbers that are different? Could it just be a typo and a few miles driving between the two?

Just under 3000mi? Seems most likely someone fat-fingered a 9-key pad—that’d be three digits off. I seriously doubt anyone is intentionally committing fraud over 3000 miles.

I had a car flagged for odometer fraud. Was just a typo I caused when I bought and registered it in VA then a couple weeks later registered it in NY after a move. Went to sell it 5 years later and carfax informed me of my mistake. It wasn’t worth correcting as it showed I had altered the milage a thousand miles or so on a 120k+ mile vehicle.

Might’ve been a typo, 6 is just above 9 on the numberpad.

I agree with other cmoments, looks like an honest typo. Happens sometimes

Carfax says that all the time, and it’s generally clerical errors. If it has a computer controlled odometer I’m pretty sure it’s next to impossible to roll back the mileage, and as AMGtech said, if you’re going to do it, go for broke.

That was my thinking too. 3k is not worth the risk.

There was a 2012 Volvo s60 with an issue of fat fingers. A service was reported at 75,000 miles Instead of 7500

So huge red flag because the car was traded in with 30k. So the record goes from new to 3500 to 75000 to 15k and so on. Because of it the car is very cheap.

It’ll hurt your resale down the road more than likely unless you can prove it and fix it (with like service records or something)

But that is such a small amount to be off by... I don’t think it’s intentional.

Most odometer issues on carfax are based on errors in reporting by the service departments.

Happen all the time, usually done by the service advisor or oil change guy writing out the wrong mileage on a form.

One of the few areas where Carfax actually reports well is service appointments, so getting off mileage is highly possible.

Too bad they don’t do the same for body work and collisions. Turns out any accident the car is in requires a certain percentage of dollar amount to value in order to be reported.

So not every single fender bender will be reported on Carfax, even if its done properly, with insurance agency involved even at dealership level. Much less some cheap shop done without the insurance’s involvement.

Even if the Carfax shows a clean on accidents, you need to check for them. Borrow a paint depth gauge if you can, check for resprayed areas. Though it could be possible the car was repaired prior to delivery. Many cars are fixed by delivery companies because they are damaged en-rout and repaired prior to arriving at the dealership.
